I recently passed the PE test. I don’t think I posted about it. Anywho, with it comes a raise but for dumb reasons, it technically also means a new position.

I have to apply for a new position that I currently occupy and am now considered the in- house expert for the various items I design.

Since I suck at writing resumes and some one not familiar with the whole thing runs the first filter.

So, I may not qualify for the job I currently occupy and am considered the expert in for my company.

Wish me luck!

For you time.

Just be sure to include the words enginerd and ninjaneer in your cover letter and you’ll blow past any filters.

Also congratulations!

If you do a thing once and don’t completely fuck it up you become the expert. I’m an engineer too...

Also if you fuck it up in a truly spectacular way that makes you an expert too

“You did a great job, but now that you’re a PE you’re no longer qualified and we’re gonna have to let you go. Sorry!”

Congratulations!!!

This will get you promoted because you are incompetent in your current role, and oh my god we can’t fire anybody for being a dumb ass.

You also become the engineer if you’ve never done a thing but everyone in your group who did it retired. Expert via attrition.

This is sadly true at many companies

I’ve seen it to many times. I’m doing my best to stay out of higher level management .

If you’re willing to put up with a senior engineer who doesn’t know how to use any of the software, and everyone hates, you become the new expert.

If you we’re once an operational user on the platform your current organization provides support for, you’re also an expert.

Also an engineer.

Oh it wasn’t anything that intricate... it was... Office. The guy could f$&k up e-mail. We also did a lot in Excel and he was clueless. To his credit he was a brilliant engineer in a somewhat narrow field that generally lacks talent, so it was the junior engineers job to wrangle his expertise out and transmute it to digital form. But he was also a huge jerk because he knew he was valuable, and the company didn’t care because he was approaching retirement age anyways. As far as I know he’s still there, burning through junior engineers.

Jerks... we had a guy that was singularly responsible for about 10 junior engineers leaving withing 6-12 months of employment. I was at 7 years when I met him, told him to fuck off to his face during the first project I worked with him on... good times.

Yeah, I just sucked it up. See the flip side is, by babysitting him and keeping him out of everyone elses hair, very little was expected of me. I could come in hung over... still drunk... take long lunch breaks... leave early. Nobody gave a shit.

I also volunteered for other projects (including a 6 months stint working in Canada), which actually padded my resume nicely with all kinds of experiences, and got me away from him. By the end of my tenure there I barely had anything to do with him.
